Kidde XL Fire Extinguisher Voluntary Recall

posted on May 12, 2009
You may have heard that in the United States, Kidde recently announced a voluntary recall of certain XL
Fire Extinguishers that were manufactured in Mexico between October 2007 and April 2008 because they
may lose pressure faster than others, due to an off-specification lubricant.

Because Kidde takes product quality very seriously, Kidde Canada is also voluntarily recalling similar fire
extinguisher models sold in Canada that were also made in Mexico during the same timeframe. A formal
notice of the recall was posted by Health Canada on March 25, 2009.

The Canadian voluntary recall involves Kidde XL Fire Extinguishers with model numbers FX210R and E-
340-3 sold between October 2007 and April 2008.

“Kidde” and the model number can be found on the label on the front of the extinguisher. The
manufacture year is on the bottom of the extinguisher.

If asked, please advise your customers and/or help them to check if their extinguisher is one of the listed
model numbers and is marked with the manufacture year 07 or 08. If so, the customer should immediately inspect the pressure gauge. If it points to the red zone, please instruct them to contact Kidde Recall Center at 1-888-345-4407 between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. EST Mon-Fri to arrange for a free replacement extinguisher. They may also visit Kidde’s web site at www.kidde.com for more
information.

If the gauge is not in the red zone, the unit does not need to be replaced. However, if you have any
questions regarding your XL fire extinguisher please feel free to call Kidde Customer Service 1-800-880-
6788
Less than 10,000 of these extinguisher models were sold in Canada during this timeframe. There have
been no reports of incidents or injuries to Canadians related to the use of these XL fire extinguishers.
Thank you for your ongoing support. If you, or any of your customers, have questions about an
extinguisher within the listed model numbers and years of manufacture, please contact Kidde at the
number noted above.

Kidde XL Models:
FX210R (Home Series 2-A, 10-B:C Part number 21007170)

Each retro-fit kit includes a replacement valv stem asembly, and detailed instructions for removing the existing valve stem assembly from an affected unit and replacing it with the new valve stem assembly.

These units are designed for commercial/industrial, multi-residential and vehicle applications. The vast majority will be found in businesses and other commercial spaces. which require service by a fire extinguisher service company. The affected extinguishers can be visually identified by comparing them to the images above.
